Does STRESS Aggravate Allergies and What Can Be Done About it?

It’s that time of year that seasonal allergies start acting up for many people. These uncomfortable allergy symptoms include:
Itchy, watery eyes
Runny or stuffy nose
Itchy sinuses, throat or ear canals
Ear congestion
Post nasal drainage
Shortness of breath

Allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic illness in the U.S. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year.

Seasonal allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to an allergen such as plant pollen, dust mites or mold spores. People often opt for allergy medications to find relief from symptoms.

Unfortunately, allergy medication will only cover up symptoms and not get to the root cause of the issue, which ultimately comes down to your brain’s inability to adapt to stress. In addition, the toxins ingested when taking medication just place more stress on the nervous system.

Many allergy sufferers report that stress exacerbates their symptoms. As a society we are certainly under a lot of stress right now, which could mean an even worse allergy season than normal, symptomatically.

According to the American Institute of Stress, “stress triggers allergic reactions by immediately releasing histamine and immune system activities that sustain annoying symptoms”. The institute also noted that in “an experiment done decades ago, when volunteers with hay fever were placed in a room filled with ragweed for an hour or so, they had no symptoms, but promptly came down with a full blown attack of itchy eyes and sneezing after being deliberately provoked. (increased stress)

So how does this relate to chiropractic?

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown in research to help the brain and nervous system better deal with stress allowing it to function optimally and do what it is supposed to do, keep you healthy and well. Chiropractic offers a safe and effective alternative for reducing and possibly alleviating allergy symptoms by getting to the root cause of the problem.

Get adjusted.
